Hello Robert, I wanted to reach out off board to answer your question. Thanks for accepting my request.

Other shotguns: I quite like the Schoeps CMIT. Not the Super CMIT. I think that's a bit overblown.

I frequently use a Schoeps CMC641 hyper outside on a boom with wind protection. I like it because it doesn't hear the lows and low miss that get into interference tubes which are more omnidirectional to those frequencies. I've never compared it for reach, but never found it wanting when I used it that way.

I'm still wonder if "reach" wasn't a term created by the marketing departments of mic makers to sell more mics.

Also, the DPA shotguns and hypers are very impressive. Here's a piece I did on them not too long ago.

http://tyfordaudiovideo.blogspot.com/2015/09/dpa-boom-mics-4017-and-4018-wi...

The Rode NTG-3 and NTG-8 use the RF circuitry that Sennheiser employs on its 416 and 816. The pattern of the NTG-3 is a little wider than the 416. More about it here: http://tyfordaudiovideo.blogspot.com/2012/04/rode-ntg-3-shotgun-mic-ready-f...

And, here's a piece I did comparing the MKH 816 and NTG-8. http://tyfordaudiovideo.blogspot.com/2013/11/rode-ntg8-big-shot-gun.html

Hope you find them useful.
