The answer to this is when you cache your particles, you need to cache to Internal File instead of External in the Cache Object. Then in the tag on your particles or whatever else is cahced, you have

I have tried that Derby, but I wanted to use the multishader since the film frames are actually not repeated. They are and will be unique film frames on each clone. So is this hopeless

A simple way to do it is to use a Random Effector with the visibility box checked (paramters tab) . Then set the mode (effector tab) to noise and adjust the speed, scale, and Min Max values.
