I've had the same problem with my SDI Sony monitor and without, I know exactly what you are seeing and I was never able to fix it either, what I did do is only use Livetype and Boris Red for titling,

i just got the quad g5, and it crashes about 3 times a day, most of the time with that "you need to hold down the pwer button" meassage over a dimmed out screen and sometimes that full "kernal error"
