If you have compressed footage your computer is working hard to decode it. Especially if it's 4K. DNxHD, Cineform and Prores take more space but are easier to decode and are visually lossless.

If you convert that do 72 dpi (which is the thing that's probably happening in AE) your actual workable resolution is 842x612, which isn't a lot.
