I think you could do that with a shadow catcher object (a copy of the stairs) and assign an object buffer to this copy. Remember to put a compositing tag on the stair object so it doesn't cast shadows

Thats a problem. AE is not a true 3D package so any 3D type effect is just that, an effect. To do this properly in AE you would need something like Element 3D which is a 3D engine that sits inside Ae.

You just have to be careful when deleting polys - sometimes the vertexes are still there. Always do an optimize after any deleting to get any microscopic vexing vertexes out of the way.
