One other thing to bear in mind, Stephen, is the CMYK to RGB conversion. You said that you're working with Illustrator vectors, and that raised the red flag for me. When you convert graphics from CMYK

Check your camera settings. Does it have depth of field enabled If so, then elements will get blurrier on purpose as they move away from the camera's focal point. Disable depth of field to keep everyt

Stephen, you are pretty much in a "spend more, get more" situation. Both Ae and C4D will exploit multiple CPU cores. As you note, Ae will require a lot of RAM to do this effectively. Neither Ae nor C4
