by Sean Sartori 2 years ago
I'm in the middle of grading an SD doc. I went to get dinner, leaving the system on. When i came back there was a scanline artifact in the middle of the screen. kind of sideways, and flickering a bit.

Yup, I'm seeing it when playing out of the Blackmagic application. With normal pro res footage there is a crooked, flickering scanline. With SD footage playback is jittery and there are field artifact
color space issues 4444 to DCP

Hi I've just graded a film shot CinemaDNG and rendered it out 4444 XQ, video levels, gamma 2.4, rec 709 for a DCP. Viewing the DCP in a theater, it was washed out. The house making the DCP didn't set

They also had their projector doing a conversion from XYZ to 709 at 2.2, which made the image dim. So the projector wasn't in p3 space, so I was just really seeing a blowup of rec 709. Not ideal. Afte

DCP does not use video levels. I think your problem lies there. Try full scale (or whatever it is called in your grading software.) Gamma issues (2.2 vs 2.4) is hard to detect, but elevated black (as
getting up to speed on Lustre?
by Sean Sartori 4 years ago
Hi, I primarily grade on Resolve but recently I got a request for Lustre. It seems a bit difficult to get trained, as its part of Flame and there are either youtube videos or the training center in LA

Hey thanks for the flurry, I didn't know people held such strong opinions! I'm a resolve colorist, and there is a facility that would like to book me that is running an Autodesk shop. I guess I was pu
constant crashes with Resolve 11, new Mac Pro, and 4K
by Sean Sartori 5 years ago
Hi, I am stalled on a project because of constant crashes with Resolve. Total freeze-ups, where I have to do a hard shutdown of the machine. It happens every time I switch the timeline to 4K, or attem

Yes it could be connected to noise reduction, or it could be that the project is corrupted, as I brought it from Resolve 10. Its suspicious though, that all crashes are related to 4K. I needed to expo
Destructive glitch in Symphony relational color correction?
by Sean Sartori 7 years ago
Hi, I'm admittedly not an Avid expert (I do most of my grading in Davinci) but I encountered a glitch last week that I can't find an explanation for. I was grading along, and was about 34 minutes into
Symphony and vignettes/targeted color corrections

Hi, Is there a way within Symphony to do a simple vignette power window I am surprised Symphony cannot do this. I have tried the Spot Color effect, but I can only affect the inside of the shape. Same

Thanks for the tutorial. I have seen that one and I think I missed the mention of the "erase" function. This helps, as you can make an outside vignette. Avid is just overlaying black on the image thou

Hi, I'm a Davinci colorist, and I have a client that is working in Symphony and so I am getting familiar with those tools. One problem I am having is that the soft keys do not load. None of the functi

having trouble making SD Blu Ray
by Sean Sartori 8 years ago
I have a documentary that I want to screen in Blu Ray (the only other options are standard DVD, so this will look better). I've encoded in Compressor to an MPEG2 elementary stream and Dolby Digital Pr
Re: having trouble making SD Blu Ray

I am aware that going to Blu Ray will not "make it look better" than the original. It will, however, be a better compression than a DVD compression, as Blu Ray holds more information than DVD's. Hence
Mastering to DigiBeta - audio levels question

I'm about to output something to DB. I got the WAV files from the studio, laid them down under the picture in FCP, 4 discreet channels going to to the deck via SDI. I mapped each channel appropriately

Well, sure but I was hoping that I could rely on the paid professional for paying attention to the specs and take the responsibility for the levels. Now, if I alter this mix and it comes back for what
processing question
by Sean Sartori 9 years ago
Hi, I am doing the color for a project that was shot on HD, and is delivering SD. The editor has set it up so that there is an HD-SD conversion happening in the sequence, ie the sequence is 720x480, a
Re: processing question

I agree with you here, and it is a strange way to work. The thing is, the director is very concerned with color and look shifts when the project is converted to SD. Thus why he wants to do the color c
