usually alpha channels are used to make transparent areas you can see through. The Foreground object help has a picture of what they were thinking when they created it (not that that is the only use)

I don't have AE in front of me right at this moment so forgive me if this doesn't work: You could try pre-composing the layer and it's luma matte and apply a matte choke to the new pre-comped layer. S

Are you playing this exported file in QuickTime If so, it sounds like a problem with the gamma settings of your exported file. Or, more accurately, a problem with how QuckTime is displaying it. Try op

Yes, you need to transcode the footage to ProRes. You cannot remove pulldown from Long GOP footage after it has been captured...nature of the format. Convert to ProRes, then remove pulldown. Shane GET

To get it to be letterbox, you can just drop the footage on to a 4:3 timeline and FCP will automatically letterbox it. As for getting it to NTSC you have a few options. Nattress Standards Converter is

You should be able to paste the contents of the audio file into the video file with Quicktime Pro before compressing. Just open the audio file, go to Edit Select All, Edit Copy. Open the video file: E

Editing video files on your Startup Disk can slow you down a bit but probably not as bad as what you're describing, unless you've got less than 10% of that disk free. I'd recommend always storing your
