Log & Transfer tips?
by Ray Stark 6 years ago
Hi folks, I'm working on my first AVCHD project (in FCP 7). I've read most of the How To's and have some specific questions for the veterans out there: 1) What's your recommendation for naming clips I

How do you make 59.94 footage work on a 23.98 timeline without being jerky?
by Ray Stark 6 years ago
On my GH2 the 720p mode allows FAR more recording time than the 1080p mode. However, the 720p mode records in 59.94 and the 1080p mode records in 23.98. Is there a way to convert this 59.94 footage to

Not really. I mean, 59.94 works better in a 23.98 sequence than 29.97 footage does, but it wasn't designed for the "film look" of converting to 24p. There's no way to shoot 29.97 with pulldown...meani
RIP Mac Pro?

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for this...couldn't find a Mac Pro forum. I need to upgrade my system (currently an old G5) in the next few months. Many articles I've read, including from contrib

It's been a few months and Apple still hasn't made a peep. The iMac and Mac Mini options are interesting, but they aren't very expandable. Plus the iMac comes with a monitor which I don't need (alread
AVCHD workflow for MC
by Ray Stark 8 years ago
I'm considering switching back to Avid from FCP and I'm looking for a solid tutorial for the AVCHD workflow (specifically from a GH2 camera). I searched the Avid Knowledge Base and Panasonic's site wi

Last time I was on an Avid, it was tape-based, so I'm just trying to get up to speed with tapeless acquisition. I'd hoped that Media Composer would transcode the footage automatically, but I've heard
Wrapping my head around storage - how much space do files take up?
by Ray Stark 8 years ago
I've done a few searches, read thru Shane Ross' informative workflow tutorial and read thru the Canon 60d manual. But I'm trying to find a good resource that shows what to expect in terms of storage w

Thanks guys, that's a great start. My old paradigm of backing up on tapes is now obsolete! Just thought though: say, a 100 min project at a 5:1 shooting ratio = 500 min of footage. Translated to ProRe
What kind of machine do I need?
by Ray Stark 9 years ago
Please pardon me if this isn't the correct place to post this. I have owned a dual 2.0 Powermac G5 since 2004. I primarily use it for editing rendering on FCP, basic graphics in Photoshop, basic rende

Thanks for your response. Yes, my media & renders are on a separate, dedicated hd. I've heard that Adobe CS products (like After Effects) can't use the full potential of these new macpros. Does that m
Nothing shows up in composition window

For some reason I can't drag footage and or an Effects Preset (background) into the composition window. When I do this, only a black screen appears (although the clip appears in the Project window and

Hi Ray, Could be that you've accidentally set your FAST PREVIEW (at the bottom of your comp window) to wireframe. Hope this helps. Bob
Creating a high-speed shutter effect

Hello...I very much like the high-speed shutter effect used in many action sequences (e.g. Gladiator) and sports footage where there's no blurring and an almost strobe-like feel is created in the acti

Thanks for all the info. Fortunately, I have a few months to do some tests before the shoot.
VHS to FCP via passthrough
by Ray Stark 9 years ago
After reading several posts it sounds like it is possible to send an analog VHS signal to my Canon GL-1 and then into FCP for recording old video tapes. However, it doesn't work without first dubbing

Try leaving the loading door open on the camera; sometimes this defeats the automatic time-out. "Oh, you wanted to RECORD that "
Editing with 720pn footage
by Ray Stark 9 years ago
Having only dealt with shooting editing 29.97 dv, I want to take a stab at 24p. My goal is to shoot a short film on the HVX200 (using p2 cards) in the 720pn 24 mode, edit in FCP and output on dvd. Aud
