What you want to do is use a thing called a garbage matte. If you're on a version before 10.2 you should duplicate the clip and apply a mask on the top layer. this would also be the layer that you use

Select the "Retime" menu between the Enhancement Menu and Filters Menu and choose "Conform Speed". So much easier than the old Cinema Tools trick. I'm pretty sure this forum says "Apple Final Cut Pro"

Move to X, it's worth it in the long run. If going to tape is your issue, grab Resolve Light. It's free, prints to tape, and kicks the crap out of Color. If you need CC, well... I'm waiting on that on

Render full is your issue. If it plays back fine without render then you can just go File Export Quicktime Movie. You can take this file straight into iMovie (which will take forever) or you can do it
