You can use bevel effects to make something look 3d. If you want to do this in actual 3d, don't forget that Cinema 4D Lite comes with After Effects. It's a stripped down version of the full 3d softwar

The ray-traced renderer, the settings you're looking at in your screenshot, has nothing to do with particles or with anything most people use After Effects for. I wouldn't worry about it at all. :) -
