I'm an old dog that constantly strives to learn new tricks.
I remember when the speed of the credit roll was determined by how fast you cranked the handle on the graphics drum and if you wanted black font you switched the B & W cameras polarity. Font style selection was based on how many rub down letters were left on the sheet. Editing tools included a razor blade and magnifying glass, eventually we used beep tones for a cuts only edit. A bad day was when one of the tubes went out on the quad VTR and banding was corrected by adjusting the azimuth, usually while playing back on-air.
During my days working as on-air switcher it was all in a days work to manually load and roll the dual film chain for the afternoon feature film and use a slide projector with promo slides and dual cart machine with episodic VO announcements for program bumpers and promos. Syndicated programs arrived in huge heavy containers and were aired from quad machines requiring at least 7sec pre roll which were determined by how many revolutions you turned the reel. This was all managed from a Telemation and eventually a CDL vision mixer with a manually typed run log and stop watch while taking meter readings and watching the waveform/vector scope/audio meters.
Since then I've invested in and used the Betamax, 1", 3/4", Beta & Beta SP, MII, D-2, DigiBeta, HD, HDV, AVCHD and other tapeless media formats. I watched Computerized linear editing and all it's spin offs break the paradigm, I also doubted non-linear editing, probably because I was heavily invested in GVG, Sony, Dubner, Scientific, and a bunch of other linear brand names.
I remember the first editing facilities I built took a prolonged trip to NAB to visit each vendor, discussions about composite versus component as we tried to manage a 6 figure budget. The delivery of all the equipment and installation including an entire companies support and 4 engineers working several weeks to complete a single linear edit bay install took more than 3 months. By the time it was completed some of our gear was outdated.
I've never sat still long enough to recall all the various technologies, practices and paradigms I've seen shattered. As time permits I'll add to and update this synopsis of my 35years in this business, for now I need to get back to work.
