You can look in your settings (look for the gear wheel icon bottom right) and see if you can change settings there. When you set up a timeline you can change from defaults by selecting the Custom tab

Are the files wav or broadcast wav with embedded timecode If wav, then they have no frame rate. If bwf then you need to make sure the timecode is 23.976 or 24 as most professional recorders like Sound

It rewrites the file and changes the sample rate but being uncompressed there is no real data change if the levels etc are untouched.

It would be so much easier to use Resolve or Premiere which can work with this natively. Resolve has a free version which is capable of this. Portrait can be edited in landscape and then reoriented.

Alright, I think I get it. Select clips -- assign role. I can use the minimize button to shrink the tracks that I've already assigned, and then assign (or re-assign) the remaining tracks. Makes sense.

Not much point in using HQ. Normal ProRes422 is fine for footage coming from a DSLR. Have a search on the Final Cut Pro forum for advice from Gary Adcock about avoiding HQ except for 2k up frame sizes
