You might be best of to get rid of the Mac on craigslist and switch to a PC. I see no sense it sinking money into an old computer system. In about 7 weeks you will be able to get 6 core Coffee Lake CP

You are going from a 16:9 widescreen source to a 4:3 output. What Format are you exporting to Meaning H.264, DVD, something else 640x480 output would use Square Pixels. 720x480 is "DV" and uses 0.9 pi

We ran 16gb in our systems until 4k projects started coming in making everything slow as molasses even at the lowest viewer resolution. upgrading to 32gb made everything much more responsive.

I stopped using mpeg streamclip to make mp4's because it changes the gamma and changes the color. I have complete success using Export Using Quicktime Conversion mp4. it works great.
