Thank's for those pointers, they did help somewhat. The original file is just an uncompressed animation file. The background texture is pretty detailed and there is a fair amount of animation going on

You could use a mask then apply a Displacement Map to it, then animating the mask path. Markus Gustafsson shows an example how to do this in this technique here: http: reels.creativecow.net film marku
