This bug now confirmed in-house at Adobe. Times used to be that one could get users on forums like this to check out and confirm bugs like this quickly. Those days seem to be over.

Yeah--you might look at how Lightroom does it--subtly but helpfully, using that grey frame around the image. The exact same user need exists in PP. One of my biggest gripes is how PP forgets the sort

Not that it's the most elegant of work arounds, but perhaps the 1st thing to do when beaking apart audio from video is to add a marker to both video and audio on the same frame so you can line back up
