We are using roles extensively inside of fcpx. We actually start each project by importing an xml that has all of our house roles attached to some bars and tone clips. This way it stays standardized.

I believe fcpx has to process audio through the system audio, so you have to choose bm audio there on your main sound output. However, to get the other crud like alerts to go through the display speak

keyboard shortcut - Opt+arrow L and R will move you word by word through any text in the OS. This might help navigate it. CMD+L and R moves you to the front or end of the entire line as well.
