noticed that if you disable thumbnails in the sequence it's much snappier, still not perfect but that had something to do with it.

The iStar HDD cage that's mentioned by Tim is not an external device. It goes inside a PC cabinet and needs an SMPS to power it. and it uses 3.5" drives. For 2.5" drives you could consider a 2.5" RAID

Whenever I encountered that problem I would restart FCP and that would solve the issue. You can also set in an out points on the sequence and render things out in smaller pieces on the sequence first

You can copy the .vob files from DVD to hard drive, import into Premiere, put clips on timeline and Export. Note there is no ProRes export on PC, will need the Mac for that. Thanks Jeff Pulera Safe Ha

The audio should sync fine, as long as you set up FCP to properly import your audio without the timestamping issue that plagues so many people. Follow the second half of my tutorial and it should fix

Yes, shortest clip determines the boundaries. However, you can matchframe back to the full length audio at any point.
