When you import your layered PSD into AE, choose Composition instead of Composition-Retain Layer Sizes. That will bring in each layer at the size of the document. --- It is easier to destroy than to c

On the Import dialog box, click Options then uncheck "import as sequence." Not terribly automatic, but it'll let you import individual files. --- It is easier to destroy than to create. More fun, too.

I'm guessing you're on a Mac, since what you're describing sounds like Expos behavior (the Shift key makes it go in slo-mo). Go into your System Preferences, select Keyboard & Mouse, and under the Key
