If yiu know someone who is running FCPX and you've got $149 in your budget, you might try CoreMelt SliceX with Mocha. It's really quite awesome for this type of thing, and you use Mocha to track it. O

thanks for responding... Yes that's it, so the problem is coming through the LCD - appears to be alright on the mac monitor which I just plugged back in -
