You should locate the cache to the internal ssd. It's faster than usb3 or thunderbolt. The preview files are only media, rendered to a specific codec. So this should work fine on an external drive. Ni

You can use some shortcuts to playback faster than realtime without going so fast you can't understand the dialog. Hit play, with either spacebar or L key to being playback. Hold Shift key down, tap L

As I mentioned before if you need to multiclip, all video formats must match, that means you will have to transcode all of your DVCPRo HD footage to ProRes LT. You could setup a droplet in Compressor

Online backup of media will be slow regardless of the speed of the connection. HUGE amounts of data to push. We use the WiebeTech solution and simply have a clone of each drive that lives off site. If
