Hello Zach, This is actually pretty simple once you know how to do it. To start you need to bring your footage in a new comp and duplicate it so you have 2 copies. Then add a null layer on top. Select

What is the resolution of your project It could be that it is simply too low. Instead of using a solid layer as the line I would just draw a mask line between the two points and use generate stroke ef

Did you set your project to 32 BPC (Bits Per Channel) will increase the number of bits used to create your colors allowing you more steps between your bands. you can change your bpc on the bottom of y

Hey John,
Been a while. I just stumbled across this post when I was looking at some AE forums that made me think of that old HM Safety video you and I animated.
(link below:
https://gfycat.com/gifs/detail/UnlinedShortBlobfish)

It was all done using 2d Layers and is completely procedural. Once built the 2d rig can look up down left and right with keyframing only 2 to 3 properties. It uses a script called joysticks n' sliders ( https://aescripts.com/joysticks-n-sliders/)

Anyway I wasn't sure if you have played around with these at all, and if you hadn't I thought you might find it interesting.

All that being said, would love to hear how you and the team are doing! Hope all is well!
