Why is there so much "art" in color science?
by Andy Zou 6 days ago
Just some questions on the technology and theory behind this stuff. People talk all about how so-and-so's color beats the other's color, but why does any of that matter when a LUT could convert one ca

I'd certainly be interested in reading watching more. Gamut is something I still haven't completely wrapped my head around; the idea of cameras seeing different color-space doesn't quite make sense to
IRE values on the waveform monitor
by clyde villegas 2 weeks ago
Hello friends! On the waveform monitor, I know that the y axis is for luminance values and x axis is the representation of the image from left to right. I can spot which on my shot is over exposed or

Yeah, it's just intuition. The bright stuff will be above the darker stuff; it helps if the subject can move, then it becomes very apparent. It could also help to be able to mask the subject, or on-of
Stopping the wiggle expression after a few second.
by Ruo Zheng 1 month ago
Hey everyone, I just starting learning about expressions and currently, I'm trying to make a flicker-in effect for this logo. I have wiggle(100,100) in the Opacity property of the logo but I'm trying

Personally, I'd whip tie the wiggle function to a Slider, then keyframe the slider from 100 to 0 when you want it. That way you can also "fade" the wiggle using keyframes and avoiding expressions.

Thanks Walter, that should work well for any future iterations! I remember reading about it but not knowing when I'd use it.
Tips on Color Correction workflow? Propagating edits across master clips is infuriating!
by Andy Zou 7 months ago
It's nice that you can copy and paste effects to clips in the project bin to have them all be master effects, but the fact that you can't delete them is very annoying. I know you can "Disable" them, b

Anybody else have a bug with Duplicate Frame Markers flagging everything?
by Andy Zou 7 months ago
I've got a sequence with a bunch of Prores 4K files recorded from a GH4 to External PIX-E5 recorder. Lots of clips are flagged with duplicate frame marker, despite not actually being duplicates elsewh
Is 100mbps h264 better or worse than 100mbps Prores?
by Andy Zou 7 months ago
Hypothetically, if both options were available, like a gh4 recording to external media. My assumption is that the h264 will be better, since the Prores must attribute data to the extra 2 chroma channe

Best practices for composition organization, flow?
by Andy Zou 1 year ago
This is obviously a very broad, contextual question, but is there a good rule of thumb for how often to pre-compose Especially when elements are involved that will be used in multiple compositions If
Re: Best practices for composition organization, flow?

That pre-compose from the project panel is pretty nifty, I hope I'll be able to use it sometime. I guess my issue is that precomps may be useful for keeping things in sync across a project, but then,
Good 3D cinematography forums?

It's still such a relatively niche and cost-prohibitive field which is probably why all the internet forums online seem to be relatively tiny and uninhabited. The ones that I've seen at least. I'm loo

Why the big dogs skipped 'full frame' when going from super-35 to 70mm
by Mathew Farrell 2 years ago
As a cinematographer, I'm of an age where I'm more used to working in "full frame" of 8-perf 35 than Super-35. I'm not here to bang on about its superiority or flaws, but I find it interesting that wh

Looks like you spoke too soon. Sony VENICE! Honestly, I think decades of super35mm work meant most of the cinematography tech was adapted to it. Full Frame is primarily a photo realm, and not all lens
Best color for "Change to Color" or "Replace Color"?

Determining aperture from footage?

I am also a cinematographer when I'm not doing post work, and I was wondering if there was an easy way to determine what aperture was used in a scene by tracking the footage. We're trying to mimic som

Unless that sort of information is included in the clip's metdata -- and you find an application that can access it -- the answer is "no". AE can't do it on its own. It could also be a good trick find
Save corruption? Audio, Video Drift across closing and re-opening???
by Andy Zou 3 years ago
I've encountered what appears to be a rather catastrophically peculiar bug on the latest CC, but I don't know if it's peculiar to my system or to the files. C100 MK1 PF30(29.97) footage as .MTS, which
Re: Save corruption? Audio, Video Drift across closing and re-opening???

I know some folks are fine with MTS footage. I usually transcode it to something else before editing. If it has audio, I avoid MP3 encoding of the audio for editing. System: Dell Precision T7600 (x2)
I have to revisit an old project that had RayTracing in it... My newer hardware is incompatible with RayTracing. Do I have easy options?

i think you can still render it, it will just render with the cpu rather than the nvidia cuda cores. the render will take longer, but the result should be the same. Kevin Camp Art Director KCPQ, KZJO

My off-the-top of my head guess is that it takes a second to decode the h264 and put it into ram or some sort of cache or preview, which is why a cold start on a clip may take a second but giving it a
Best way to preview resource intensive effects? Why does Reference Monitor update before Program Monitor?

I've been testing Unsharp Mask on some footage, and unfortunately it's so resource intensive that it's really hard to on off and preview changes. One thing I notice is that with certain effects, like
How does 2-Pass VBR calculate how to allocate it's "bit-budget"?

Like I said, guys, I know what VBR is. Perhaps my question is beyond the scope of a forum and I'd need to read up on h264 encoding. I wanted to know how it decides where to allocate its allotted bits
