It's because frame mode is not true progressive scanning, it's just adding 2 fields together. Also, i believe you are losing some noticable resolution. Further, it's all about what you need to achieve

you can use color corrector 3 way in final cut pro for a pretty good effect. Just smash blacks down, and lower mids a lot, and make whites a little yellowish. Thint the darks and mids blue also. After

I haven't used Squeeze in a while, but between Cleaner and Compressor, Compressor was by far the better result, as long as you can live with the limitations it imposes on the MPEG2 file.
