Alan Okey 4 years ago
Dear David,

I'm not sure if you recall, but several years ago you called me around the time that FCP 7 was about to be released to discuss the state of Final Cut Studio and other topics. I had been a frequent participant on the Creative Cow Final Cut Pro forum, which is where we initially connected. At that time, I was living in upstate NY working at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an AV technician, doing freelance editing and color work on the side.

For the past three years, I've been living in Boston working as a video producer for Partners Healthcare, which is essentially the Kaiser Permanente of the Northeast. At Partners, I had to wear many hats - I was responsible for shooting, lighting, sound, editing, compression, DVD authoring and live video streaming, and I also served as the main hardware and software technician for our small postproduction facility. This spring I decided to leave Partners and move to Los Angeles. I've been wanting to relocate to California for quite some time, and I feel that Los Angeles is ultimately the best fit for my skills and aspirations. I just arrived in L.A. last week after driving across the country from Boston.

Although working for Partners Healthcare was valuable experience, I didn't find the projects I that was working on to be particularly fulfilling from a creative standpoint. Ideally, I'd rather be working in the film/broadcast post industry than doing corporate video.

I gather from your somewhat diminished presence on the Cow that you are kept fairly busy these by your business and current position at ProMAX. If your schedule permits, I'd greatly appreciate the opportunity to buy you a drink or coffee sometime and to learn about your extensive experience in the postproduction industry. I'd also appreciate any advice you might be able to offer on becoming part of the post industry in Los Angeles.

Is your facility still located in Van Nuys? I happened across this page on the Cow (dated 2010) that shows your location as being near the Van Nuys airport:

http://services.creativecow.net/s/4629/david-weiss-productions-inc

Coincidentally, I am staying with friends who live in Van Nuys on Gaviota Avenue, which is just a few blocks from your (former?) location.

Thank you for your consideration, and I hope that all is well with you.

Sincerely,

Alan Okey
