I did not get what you wrote there but here is how to get a spline from a polygon object. -Select the edge you want to convert to a spline. -On the top bar menu select STRUCTURE -Select EDIT SPLINE -S

You are using UVW Projection (click the material tag on the object). This is directly related to the mesh... some polygons are bigger than others so the material is stretching to fit. Change the Proje

If you render a preview you should see that the the bkg is still there. Also your distortion can be caused by the projection method. If you select the material tag you can see in the attribute manager
