Maybe it is a video card issue...have you tried updating the drivers Also, you shouldn't have issues in Ae with AVI files, but the others may be on Dave's infamous list. What video card are you using

Add a little blur and play with transfer modes. You can also create a texture using fractal noise in a precomp, and then layer that over the text and use the text as a track matte to confine the noise

Create a new Null object, then parent all of the layers to that one Null object. Next, move the Null and the children will follow. If you are unsure of parenting, hit F1 and the help will explain it..
