Here's one way to do it. It basically uses Object Envelope Distort Make with Top Object. The joint will meet almost perfectly, so you may have to make a few minor adjustments depending on your needs.

I took a shot at your challenge also. I was able to create the leg of the 'R' by skewing a film frame, making a tile out of it, then creating a pattern brush and applying it to the path. It looks good
