You are correct. A laptop capable of comfortable AE work will be costly. Check out the folks at BOXX. They make laptops specifically for this sort of work, and you'll see what I mean about the prices.

Chances are your MiniDv tapes were created from a direct output of the timeline when the project was edited. The DVD is a highly compressed version of this. Re-edit with the highest quality version -
