Thanks for replying. It's working now, though I'm not sure why since that's basically what I was doing. I did restart the computer, so maybe that had something to do with it.

If anybody is still using FCP and Looks 1.2, the solution seems stupidly simple. apply the effect, cut and copy it, put a keymark, click edit, should be fine, works fine here at least.
