Just a final piece to the puzzle. Make sure the bit depth of the uncompressed audio is only 16 or 24 bit. FCP also has trouble with sample rates like 32 bit.

Not much point in using HQ. Normal ProRes422 is fine for footage coming from a DSLR. Have a search on the Final Cut Pro forum for advice from Gary Adcock about avoiding HQ except for 2k up frame sizes

The data rate of XDCam EX is already very low. There is not point in an offline online workflow as the data rate is only 30% greater than DV or HDV so there is nothing to be gained by reducing XDCam.

FCP is a quicktime based editor. It can import avi files but it is better to convert them to quicktime files first. Not sure what you are describing with the timeline canvas Have you tried the manual
