Only way to really tell if your workflow will work for you is to try a few clips all the way through the process. Subclips usually don't present any problems, but merged clips might have some problems

Select the clip in the sequence, then click on the transform button (found just under the viewer) add a keyframe (button shows up in the viewer), then move later in the clip to set where the expansion
