Your solution will work fine,I've been doing that for several years now. It does require you to be diligent in your archive procedures and is a little more hands on than a automated tape backup system

Sounds like your doing everything right. Try applying the filter by selecting it through the Effects Menu. If that doesn't work, maybe it's time to Save and close the app. Restart the computer and go
