You can also try Mark-- DV Start Stop Detect. This should create a bunch of markers on your master clip. Highlight those markers, and create sub-clip.

Problem you're having with MpgSteamclip is strangely enough, broken timecode. Repair the time code (there's a menu option for this), and you should be able to rip it just fine.

I concur....the first thing that came to mind was it's either the deck or the tape. Scrubbing sound means something was put down. I'm putting my money on a bad tape. Reload and try again.
