Try trashing your preferences. If that doesn't work, try the crash analyzer that's available in Digital Rebellion's Pro Maintenance Tools. It should tell you exactly where it's hanging up. What to do

I love the quick and dirty method....and I'm sure you realize that you can set the default encoding settings in DVD SP preferences. I try to keep mine at about 5mbps and 2 pass VBR.

Problem you're having with MpgSteamclip is strangely enough, broken timecode. Repair the time code (there's a menu option for this), and you should be able to rip it just fine.

I concur....the first thing that came to mind was it's either the deck or the tape. Scrubbing sound means something was put down. I'm putting my money on a bad tape. Reload and try again.
