i thought instead of an auto-save, maybe it was a 'pre-crash save.' that may explain some of the instances, but it seems AE also saves periodically without crashing, even though auto-save is unchecked

I also have had this problem. The solution I found for my situation was to export the sequence in its native codec... in my case XDCAM EX 720p 23.98 fps. The problem was present if I used Animation or
