I do this pretty often for the wiggle effect If you are using expressions you could control the wiggle with a Slider Control: Alt Option click on the stopwatch next to the property you wish to wiggle,

You can try the Mesh Warp effect. It's pretty simple to use, you can define the number of points horizontally and vertically, then grab a point and start scrunching.
